Habarana, Sri Lanka - Tree Houses and Safaris

Habarana is a little further north and a good place to be based with many attractions located within drving distance. We stayed in a tree house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and wildlife. We were there in the dry season, but a little later in the year will find wild elephants walking past the front door!

The first afternoon that we arrived we took a jeep safari to the nearby Minneriya national park where we were lucky enough to see over 100 wild elephants around the lake. We even saw some babies that were only a week old! They were incredibly cute.

The following day we visited the ancient rock fortress Sigiria. A palace was built on top of the 660ft rock when the site was selected as the new capital in 447 AD. It was later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century when it was abandoned.

There were a lot of steps to climb to reach the top, but when we got the the view was pretty spectacular. The first picture below was taken when we had already climbed 2/3 of the way up.

All to quickly our time in Sri Lanka was over. We really enjoyed visiting and would love to go back some day, particularly to visit some of the coastline.
