Bangkok, Thailand - Street Food Galore

Well the first leg of our trip is over and we can't believe how quickly it has gone! We now start 2 months of exploring South East Asia, beginning with 3 days in Bangkok. Surprisingly we enjoyed this city more than we had expected. Perhaps surviving the overwhelming experience of Delhi has set us up well for anything a busy city can throw our way.

We caught the canal ferry from the pier just over the road from where we were staying to get to the old city. We missed the first boat that came along - it turned out that they don't really stop, you just have to leap on board if you want to get on. Once we had worked out how to get on the journey cost us 10 baht each (about 20p), so we can't complain.

We have to admit to not doing a lot whilst we were in Bangkok. We just roamed the streets, sampling street food, ice cream and fruit smoothies as we went along.

We went to the huge flower market which sold a vibrant array of beautiful blooms. Tbe orchids were particularly gorgeous.

We visited China Town, which was 4 times the size of its London counterpart. Most of the stalls here we also selling food. It apears the Thai like to eat!

We even ventured into the tourist area which was packed with bars, clothes stalls and people selling cooked insects. It was 6.30pm when we went into one of the bars for a drink and most people were already on cocktail buckets. We didn't hang around to see the result later that evening, we had the excuse of needing to catch the last ferry home.

For the first time in the trip we stayed in a hostel, which actually turned out to be rather nice. We booked a double bed in a superior dorm, where there were 6 beds in total with walls between them and curtains around them for privacy. The room had air conditioning and the communal area was a good place to just chill out. The only downside was the persistent snorer in the bed next to us on the last night. Good job we bought ear plugs!

We are about to catch an overnight bus and catamaran to get to one of the islands in southern Thailand, Koh Tao, for some sea, sand and diving.
